They were, in fact, so early that the original version of this album, featuring a picture of the group on the cover, was soon withdrawn and repackaged with a picture of two white teenagers picking out a song from a jukebox. Originally released on the END record label in 1957, the Chantels’ debut consists of little more than both sides of their first six singles for the label, resulting in almost a greatest-hits package. Reissued here in its original (and highly hard to find!) “plantation girls” cover, this is probably the most seminal and influential record in the “all-female” chapter of rock and roll history.
