Sarah (Eva Green) is a French astronaut training at the European Space Agency in Cologne. She is the only woman in the arduous program. She lives alone with Stella, her seven-year-old daughter. Sarah feels guilty that she cannot spend more time with her child. Her love is overpowering, unsettling. When Sarah is chosen to be part of the crew of a year-long space mission called Proxima, it creates chaos in the mother-daughter relationship. Alice Winocour’s French drama features music by award winning Japanese composer and Yellow Magic Orchestra member Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Revenant, The Last Emperor, Black Mirror). “Sound and music are so important,” Winocour told TIFF. “I worked with [Ryuichi] Sakamoto, the composer, on the film. He’s also really interested in sound design; he was recording sounds of nature like the astronauts [do] in the film. We used that sound in the music. We worked for three months with Sakamoto to find the right minimalist score that uses the sounds of Earth. To me, sound is sometimes more important than the image.”
