Jazz At The Philharmonic began on July 2, 1944 when jazz entrepreneur Norman Granz staged a benefit concert at Philharmonic Hall in Los Angeles. It was an overwhelming critical and commercial success, and spawned more concerts. Eventually a series of national and international tours were organized, Granz decided to record them for posterity – knowing that the jazz public would want to relive the historic sounds of JATP for years to come. He handpicked the musicians for JATP, and they were indeed the cream-of-the-crop. This all-star installment with Oscar Peterson, Illinois Jacquet and Herb Ellis taking top billing was recorded in October of 1955 at the Chicago Civic Opera House and is broken down into four thrilling tracks entitled “The Blues,” “The Modern Set,” “The Ballad Medley” and “The Swing Set.” And to top if off further jazz luminaries like Dizzie Gillespie, Ray Brown, Buddy Rich, Roy Eldridge and Lester Young stop by as well. Unparalleled live jazz!
