Although in music circles it is known primarily as the birthplace of reggae, Jamaica has long had a love affair with jazz music. In the early 20thcentury there were a large number of successful big band groups and the legendary Alpha Boys School in Kingston taught jazz to some of the country’s most legendary musicians including Joe Harriott, Dizzy Reece, Harold McNair, and the founding members of the Skatalites. Even Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd’s first love was jazz music. And in 1962, just prior to the creation of The Skatalites while ska was quickly growing in popularity, Dodd took time off to indulge that love by recording this album led by pianist Cecil Lloyd. Featuring soon-to-be Skatalites Don Drummond, and Roland Alphonso, I Cover The Water Front shows the world that Jamaican musicians could swing with the best of them, with just the slightest taste of island flavor to top it off. A stellar early 60s jazz title that was nearly impossible to find until now, back in print on 180 gram vinyl.
