Strictly limited (75 of each title) indies only coloured editions of six reissues of Nigerian icon and Afrobeat originator Fela Kuti’s most important albums. This will be the first time they are released individually since their original vinyl release in Nigeria in the 70s and 80s.

The album was an indictment of the corruption and repression in post-colonial Africa, addressing a variety of targets, each of them, said Fela, guilty of enslaving Africans: the Nigerian regime, the South African apartheid regime of PW Botha, Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, America’s Ronald Reagan and the ineffectual United Nations. Botha, Thatcher and Reagan are among the political leaders portrayed as beasts and devils on the front sleeve.

According to Lemi Ghariokwu, ‘Beasts Of No Nation’ was the first song Fela composed following his release from prison after having served 18 months of a five year sentence.

‘Everything Scatter’ (1975): The lyrics portray Nigeria’s conflicted society through the metaphor of argument supposedly taking place among the passengers on a bus passing Kalakuta.

Fela’s use of ‘mosquito’ refers to the fact that prisons were sometimes deliberately sited near malarial swamps.
