Rock’n’roll can pretty much burn off pure mythology alone, but what happens when the soap opera of drug abuse and broken relationships threatens to overwhelm the music? Those are a few of the many issues the talented yet notorious Libertines – led Carl Barat (vocals/guitar) and Pete Doherty (vocals/guitar) – faced for the past decade.

However, that’s all in the rear view mirror for now as the two British troubadours along with drummer Gary Powell and bassist John Hassal reunited in 2014 for a show at London’s Hyde Park and have the new album Anthems for Doomed Youth coming down the pike in 2015. Their first studio effort in over eleven years and third overall, following breakthrough debut Up the Bracket (2002) and sophomore set The Libertines (2004), features 12-tracks including the recently unveiled cut “Gunga Din.”

Doherty on the new material to Rolling Stone: “They’re as melodic as ever – bouncy and buoyant, but with those ever-present doom-laden undertones. You know what we’re like. We’re all over the place, we’re a mess, but we’ve got a few things going for us – and that is these melodies that weave our fucking songs together.”
